Sri Lanka’s premier paint manufacturer, Asian Paints Causeway, recently demonstrated its commitment to community welfare by carrying out a transformative color-washing project at the Psychogeriatrics Unit of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in Angoda. This initiative, undertaken as part of the company’s ongoing CSR efforts under the “Pehebara Divi” programme, highlights Asian Paints Causeway’s dedication to revitalizing public spaces across the country, including schools, cultural monuments, and hospitals.
The ability of colors to influence emotions, behavior, and physiological responses is well-documented, making them a valuable tool in creating calming, safe, and healing environments. Particularly for elderly mental health patients, the use of colors in therapeutic spaces can yield immense benefits, such as reducing anxiety, fostering relaxation, and promoting a sense of security and comfort. Carefully chosen colors can also enhance cognitive function, emotional engagement, and sleep quality while supporting therapy and relaxation activities.
Dr. Madushani Dias, Consultant Geriatric Psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the initiative, stating: “Psychogeriatrics, or the psychiatry of old age, requires carefully designed therapeutic environments to enhance treatment outcomes. Research has confirmed the direct connection between colors and mental/emotional states. When advising patients and their families, we emphasize the use of different colors for specific spaces to create the right mood and atmosphere. For this project, we applied the same principles, ensuring the selected colors establish a comfortable, homely ambiance that allows patients to forget they are in a hospital.”
“Colors are known to have a profound psychological impact on our lives,” remarked Anuradha Edirisinghe, Head of Marketing and Activation at Asian Paints Causeway. “The Pehebara Divi project at the Psychogeriatrics Unit exemplifies our commitment to the community while showcasing how we use our expertise in color to make a meaningful difference. We are truly pleased that our efforts have created a more positive and therapeutic environment for senior patients at the hospital.”
The “Pehebara Divi” programme reflects Asian Paints Causeway’s broader vision of leveraging its industry expertise to address real public needs. By revitalizing vital public spaces, the company aims to uplift spirits and foster well-being among diverse communities. Through “Pehebara Divi” and other CSR initiatives, Asian Paints Causeway underscores its deep commitment to corporate responsibility. From supporting education to preserving cultural heritage and enhancing healthcare facilities, the company’s efforts leave a lasting, positive impact on Sri Lanka. This project at the Psychogeriatrics Unit at National Institute of Mental Health, Angoda is a testament to the transformative power of thoughtful corporate engagement in improving lives.
