Horana Plantations PLC Extends ADIC Alcohol Prevention Programme to Lindula
  • Programme extended from Upcot to Lindula region during 2025/26
  • 46% of 267 surveyed Upcot participants reduced alcohol consumption

Horana Plantations PLC (HPL), a member of the Hayleys Plantations sector, has extended its alcohol prevention programme with the Alcohol and Drug Information Centre (ADIC) from Upcot to Lindula during 2025/26. The expansion follows a survey of 267 identified alcohol users in the Upcot estate cluster in FY 2023/24, which found that 46% had reduced their alcohol consumption and 4% had stopped completely.

The Upcot survey also found that approximately 49% of participants reported improved savings, 54% reported a reduction in harmful alcohol-related behaviours, and 51% spent more time with their families.

The Lindula programme now covers Bambarakelle, Eildonholl and Tillicoultry estates, with targeted support for young people, mothers and vulnerable households. In September, 35 children participated in alcohol-awareness drawing sessions, while five families received direct support. Activities are delivered across estate workplaces and households.

Launched in Upcot in 2023, the programme equips HPL's Child Development Officers, Welfare Officers and HR personnel with training and technical guidance from ADIC on alcohol prevention, behaviour change and family counselling. Estate teams use this training to engage with affected families, track progress and coordinate appropriate support. Family members, including spouses and children, participate alongside youth groups, women's groups and community volunteers. Alcohol prevention messages are also delivered through estate events, sports activities and community programmes. Johann Rodrigo, Director/CEO, Horana Plantations PLC said: "The dedication of our employees, community leaders and partners has been instrumental in driving meaningful change. Together, we are strengthening the social fabric of our plantation community to build lasting value for the communities that support our operations ."

Dr. Roshan Rajadurai, Managing Director Hayleys Plantations, further noted that "The success of the Upcot programme highlights the power of investing in people. By supporting positive change among individuals and families, we are building stronger, more resilient plantation communities and laying the foundation for long-term success."

Drawing on lessons from Upcot, Lindula officers have developed division-level action plans identifying families for home visits and group support.

N. Muthuletchumy, Welfare Officer, Stockholm Estate, Horana Plantations PLC said: “Our experience in Upcot showed us the importance of engaging families alongside individuals. We shared practical approaches with the Lindula teams, including home visits and support groups for mothers and children, to help them plan their local activities.”

The October calendar carried those plans forward across the three estates with home and field visits, Children's Day programmes, a user discussion camp on 15 October and a volleyball match on 24 October, all led by the estate welfare teams with ADIC representatives.
