IMF Forecasts Sri Lanka’s GDP Growth to Moderate to 3.7% by 2027

According to the latest World Economic Outlook from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Sri Lanka’s economic expansion is projected to settle at a 3.7 percent GDP growth rate for 2027. Over the same timeframe, the IMF forecasts the country's inflation rate at 5.4 percent and the unemployment rate at 3.9 percent. These economic trajectories come while Sri Lanka operates under an IMF Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program, which is scheduled to conclude in March 2027.

Looking at the broader international landscape, the IMF expects global economic activity to grow by 3.1 percent in 2026 and 3.4 percent in 2027. Meanwhile, overall global headline inflation is anticipated to reach 4.7 percent this year before easing to 4.1 percent in 2027. The IMF attributes these price pressures primarily to ongoing wars in Ukraine and West Asia, subsequent price spikes in energy and other essential commodities, and significant alterations in trade barriers.
