Around 5,000 houses being constructed by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) among the low facility areas in Colombo could be distributed among these people, says the UDA.

Divisional head of the Urban Regeneration Project, E.A.C. Priyashantha told adaderanabiz.lk that the UDA has planned to construct around 70,000 houses for those living in low facility dwellings with the aim of making Colombo a commercial hub.

Under the first phase of this project the UDA began the construction of 10,000 houses under its own expenditure the construction of another 20,000 houses was started this year as the second phase.

While the private sector participation has been obtained to construct some of the houses under this project 15,000 of the houses on which construction was started this year are by local companies, said Priyashantha.

Among the population in Colombo 53 percent are from low facility areas.
