There were no Giraffes at Isipathana – By Prof. Samitha Hettige

Sanskrit may have been the tool of communication among elite at the time of the Buddha. Some linguists indicate that “Pali”, a simplified version of Sanskrit evolved during the life of Buddha for non violent communication to educate the masses. As per literature, Buddha’s first sermon was delivered at “Isipathana” (Migadaya, an area where Deer roamed freely). Those who promote non violent communication at present consider the Giraffe as the symbol of non violent communication. Giraffe’s ability to see far is another quality that should be developed by those who wish lasting peace and sustainable development. Those new to Buddhism may expect Buddha’s disciples to be non violent communicators and far sighted since studies on Pali and Buddhism is bonded with non violence.

Recent news items indicate violence unleashed by those educated with tax payer’s money than the average Sri Lankan. The tax payers finance the education process to produce a cultured workforce to develop the economy. SL may learn from ancient friends in the Middle East and Far East. Punna Thero from the times of the Buddha is said to have faced violence with non violence in the Middle East. Islamic civilisations which were established later in the region are thriving due to the peace and stability maintained in the regions. The challenge of facing violence with non violence was also promoted in China by Buddhist monks. The Chinese civilization is peaceful and stable allowing one fifth of the world population to live in harmony.

In the 21st century China and Arab states are jointly taking humanity beyond planet earth with peaceful cooperation. Space exploration tops China Arab hi-tech cooperation. With the launch of the Belt and Road in 2013 China and Arab states started implementing satellite navigation cooperation based on China's Bei Dou Navigation Satellite System (BDS). The BDS based applications have benefited multiple industries in Arab states (oil and gas, agriculture, railway construction and urban management etc.). In 2018 the China Arab States BDS GNSS Center was started in Tunisia and by 2021 they jointly implemented pilot projects in key focus areas (Ref China – Arab sources).

It will be good for SL’s long term stability and the image it projects as a predominantly Buddhist sate if Buddha’s disciples promote non violent communication and guide their followers accordingly.  It may attract foreign investors and help build a republic based on freedom, justice and prosperity which the Buddha may have wished during his three private visits. As per available literature Buddha never forced Sri Lankans to follow his advice. One might get a better understanding of his philosophy if literature published in other countries by practicing Buddhists is referred.
