With an aim to enrich lives through education, the Faculty of Humanities & Sciences, SLIIT proudly announces the launch of novel degree programmes empowering educators towards quality teaching.
The new programmes are the Master of Education (M.Ed) Sinhala, English and Tamil media and the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) in Tamil and English media. In addition, a Professional Certificate in Content & Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is also offered.
The Master’s and Diploma programmes facilitates the advancement of graduate teachers in their careers and supports the professional growth of education officers. Additionally, it will enhance the necessary professional skills required for effective teaching and learning processes and drive meaningful improvements in the quality of education
The Master of Education (M.Ed) Programme
Furthering teaching careers, the Master of Education programme is accredited with Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) Levels 9 for the 12-month programme and Level 10 for the 24-month programme. The duration can be selected based on the student’s convenience. However, students who opt for the 24-month programme are eligible to register for the Ph.D after the successful completion of the M.Ed. The programme is conducted for two semesters and there will be an examination at the end of each semester.
Eligibility for admission to the M.Ed is for students who have completed the Post Graduate Diploma in Education or the Bachelor of Education Degree. The commencement of the M.Ed programme is scheduled for February 2024.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) programme
Nurturing educators who are passionate about enhancing education in Sri Lanka, the PGDE programme, is held over 18 months, at the SLIIT Malabe Campus to accommodate working professionals. It comprises two semesters, each culminating in examinations to assess students' progress. The SLIIT PGDE is accredited with Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF) Level 8.
The teaching practicum sessions span ten weeks, assisting students to gain hands-on experience within their own schools and other nominated institutions. Students are also entitled to study leave during examinations and teaching practicum sessions. Transport services are also provided for students.
Eligibility for admission to the PGDE programme includes holding a Bachelor degree from a recognized university or obtaining an National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 7 certificate, which is equivalent to the degree. Thereby, the SLIIT PGDE offers an inclusive approach enabling educators with an undergraduate degree or NVQ certificate credentials the ability to apply.
The Diploma is conducted in Sinhala, Tamil, or English, providing flexibility to a diverse group of learners. Currently, the programme is offered in Sinhala, catering to a student population of 1160.
The next SLIIT PGDE programme is scheduled to commence in February 2024, providing aspiring educators with an ideal opportunity to advance their careers and contribute to the nation's education system.
A unique feature of the SLIIT new Master’s and Post Graduate Diploma programmes are the use of the ‘Flipped Classroom Method’ helping participants towards self-learning and study at their own pace from the comfort of their homes. Students are required to attend practical classes one week per month. Importantly, both programmes are conducted on weekends.
Further empowering students, the programmes are approved by the Ministry of Education, adhering to high quality educational standards. Additionally, both programmes offer modern teaching technology, access to SLIIT's email addresses and internet facilities.
