Galle’s European Heritage

September, 3, 2015

A treasured city in the pearl of the Indian Ocean, the city of Galle is an eloquent ode to the European style and culture that revolved around the colonial era of the island. Being invaded by the Portuguese and then the Dutch, Galle was sculptured by them in a uniquely distinct manner from all other cities in the country, which hail from a Buddhist Aaryan background.

A prominent port in the early history of east-west navigation, Galle was the natural focal point at the southernmost part of the Silk Routes that connected Asia with the Mediterranean. The Dutch improved and fortified this 36 hectare citadel by constructing an encircling rampart with 14 massive bastions isolating the peninsula from the main land.

And inside the fort, houses, gables, courtyards and other architectural works of art depicting the European colonial style. Some extremely unique and notable features of this peninsula is the underground drain complex, the interconnected road and surface drain network, the Special defense constructions, the Church buildings with distinct architectural styles, and the beautifully designed official quarters and private houses. With the dawn of tourism Galle became the first glimpse of the tropics to the Europeans, with as a many 700 passengers landing on a busy day the streets of this Dutch influenced paradise were crowded with sightseers eagerly taking in the strange surroundings and the often fabulous merchandise on offer. The only major change during the British era was the addition of the Law Court complex. This also built with the elegant European style of architecture, still remains without any major changes.

Modern day Galle being a dominant tourist attraction than a residential area, is filled with Villas and Hotels. With the advent of the classy Dutch architectural style and the dawn in the concept of villas in the country, the ones in Galle stuck with adapting the European styles of architecture in them. A treasure of the past in the Southern hemisphere of the island nation, the city of Galle is an iconic conurbation of the European heritage in South Asia. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage city, Galle now attracts thousands of tourists from around the world throughout the year. The Galle Dutch Hospital, remains to date at the historical Dutch Fort as a structure that emanates a truly unique architectural character and charm, even amidst destruction. The old Galle Dutch Hospital has now been refurbished transforming it into a striking new shopping complex. This union of old world charm and modern sophistication houses exclusive stores, eateries and bars.

However, over the times, Galle has been transformed into a paradise of its own where contemporary living blends in perfectly with tradition and culture spanning over three centuries. With the new expressway in place, this seventh heaven is just an hour’s drive away from the countries capital city, Colombo. And nowadays, you would sometimes find people that would drive to Galle for dinner simply to experience the elegance and glory that’s unique to the city itself. And now with the urbanization of cities, the concept of apartments and luxury living becoming a common sight in the capital city, we could very well experience the trend now moving towards the other major cities as well. With that comes Fairway Galle , an exclusive real estate project of high-rise luxury apartments catering to the elite class with glimpses of the bay from the west while the mountains greet you with their luscious greenery from the east, making sure that the elegance of the cities rich culture and heritage is in blend.
