The government is to implement a project to enhance the passenger terminal of the Katunayake International Airport which handles some six million passengers annually to handle 15 million in the future.

This project is receiving financial assistance from JAICA and the relevant agreement has been signed, Civil Aviation Authority Ministry secretary Dr. Ravindra Ruberu told AdaderanaBiz.

“This project will begin before the end of this year. The contractors are to be decided upon very soon,” the secretary said.

Though the Katunayake International Airport can handle six million passengers during last year it had handled around seven million passengers.

Though this project is envisaged to be completed in 2016, a section is expected to be opened to the public by end 2015, added Dr. Ruberu.
