The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with the 13th Annual Research Symposium, held on February 29th, 2024, at the Galadari Hotel.
With the theme "Building Resilience: 40 Years in Retrospect," the symposium provided a platform for experts to discuss innovative solutions and strategies for disaster risk reduction.
State Minister of Technology, Kanaka Herath, attended as the Chief Guest and praised NBRO's vital work saying, "NBRO's dedication to landslide risk reduction is commendable, especially in identifying high-risk areas and protecting vulnerable communities. Their 24/7 early warning center demonstrates a proactive approach to safety.”
Minister Herath also emphasized the importance of districts like Kegalle, historically prone to landslides and floods. "NBRO's unwavering commitment to safeguarding Kegalle after the tragic 2016 landslide shows their indispensable role in disaster resilience. They not only facilitated swift resettlement but continue to assist high-risk populations through risk assessments and community outreach programs," he stated.
The Minister further highlighted the potential of technology in disaster management. "The launch of the new State-of-the-Art Disaster Early Warning System is a testament to our national commitment to integrate technology with disaster preparedness. This collaborative effort involving multiple ministries and the private sector shows the power of partnerships for the greater good," he said.
The NBRO Annual Research Symposium featured presentations, discussions, and knowledge sharing among public and private sector institutions, academia, and international agencies. It underscored NBRO's role as a leader in disaster resilience and showcased their ongoing research and commitment to building a safer future for Sri Lanka.
