* New method enables patients to heal faster; it is substantially less painful and reduces scarring

Hemas Hospital Thalawathugoda has employed laparoscopic surgery, which enables faster recovery, minimal scarring and is a significantly less painful option than conventional surgery, to successfully treat many gynecological and obstetrical issues.

The adoption of modern technology relating to laparoscopic surgery further expands the  curative service offering at Hemas Hospital Thalawathugoda and enables laparoscopic surgery to be used for a wider range of gynecologic procedures such as removal of ovarian/adnexal cyst, removal of fibromyomata, hysterectomy, treatment for sterility, fallopian tube surgery and much more. The hospital has put in place all required facilities and obtained state-of-the-art equipment necessary for laparoscopic surgery and has already successfully performed surgeries using laparoscopic surgery to treat gynecological cancers, treatment of pelvic organ prolapses and intestinal issues.

Explaining about laparoscopic surgeries in detail, Dr. Dhammika Silva, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist at the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital said, “The word ‘laparoscopy’ was conjugated using the word ‘laparos’ which means abdomen and the word ‘copy’ which translates as ‘see or watch’ in medical terminology. To perform a laparoscopy surgery the surgeon will insert a needle and inject carbon dioxide into the abdomen (approximately two or three liters) which will make the abdomen appear as an air-filled balloon and enlarge the organs, enabling the surgeon to see the organs clearly. The needle is removed and the laparoscope is inserted through a tiny incision. Another small incision is made in the lower abdomen so that the surgeon can insert surgical equipment and perform the surgery while watching the interior of the abdomen on a digital screen.”

Dr. Dhammika Silva explained that before the advent of laparoscopic surgery, surgeons needed to make large incisions on the abdomen to perform surgeries. Laparoscopy has enabled them to perform complicated surgeries using small incisions – a more aesthetically pleasing option as well, as it significantly reduces scarring. “Laparoscopy is popular amongst the general public as a safe procedure for surgeries relating to abdominal, pelvic region and reproductive organs. Since the surgical tools used in laparoscopic surgeries are delicate and complex, the surgeon’s experience and skills play a major role in the success.”

Traditional surgical procedures require the surgeon to make an opening in the abdomen, which can lead to drying of the abdomen lining which causes extra stickiness in the area. Laparoscopy can avoid such risks as the procedure does not require an opening on the outside of the abdomen. In a nutshell, compared with other procedures, multiple studies have shown laparoscopy to be safer, and to have a shorter recovery time.

Dr. Dhammika Silva added that since hysterectomy has become common to treat various conditions such as abnormal vaginal bleeding, excessive pain during a menstrual cycle, as well as cancer in the uterus and cervix or ovaries, in the present day, laparoscopic surgery offers women a less painful option.

Hemas Hospital Thalawathugoda facilitates laparoscopic procedures for women using state-of-the-art equipment and the country’s finest Obstetrics and Gynecology specialists.
