Enhanced Educational Cooperation creates more opportunities for Sri Lankan teachers in Maldives

August, 13, 2024

The High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Maldives, Ranga Goonawardena recently held a meeting with the Minister of Education of the Maldives Dr. Ismail Shafeeu, to explore ways to deepen the educational collaboration between the two nations. The discussions underscored the importance of leveraging the shared history and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and the Maldives to foster mutual growth and understanding, particularly in the education sector.

The meeting primarily focused on expanding opportunities for Sri Lankan teachers to contribute to the Maldivian education system. Over the years, Sri Lankan educators have played a crucial role in shaping the academic landscape of the Maldives, earning widespread respect and recognition for their dedication and expertise. Minister Shafeeu acknowledged this legacy, highlighting that many of the Maldives’ senior leaders and professionals were educated by Sri Lankan teachers. He expressed deep appreciation for the positive impact these teachers have had on the development of the nation

However, Minister Shafeeu also conveyed his concern regarding the recent decline in the number of Sri Lankan teachers working in Maldivian schools. This trend, he noted, could diminish the strong educational ties between the two countries. The Minister emphasized the need to reverse this decline to ensure that future generations of Maldivian students can benefit from the high-quality education that Sri Lankan teachers are known to provide.

In response, High Commissioner Goonewardene reiterated the commitment of the Sri Lankan government to supporting the Maldivian education sector. He formally requested that the Maldivian Ministry of Education consider increasing the recruitment of Sri Lankan teachers, recognizing the potential benefits for both nations. The High Commissioner emphasized that such an initiative would not only address the current shortfall but also reinforce the longstanding bonds of friendship and cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Beyond the recruitment of teachers, both parties discussed the broader context of educational collaboration. They explored the potential for establishing student exchange programs that would allow young people from both countries to gain exposure to different educational environments, cultures, and perspectives. Such programs, they agreed, could play a significant role in building lasting relationships and fostering mutual understanding between the next generation of Sri Lankans and Maldivians.

High Commissioner Goonewardene expressed his enthusiasm for these initiatives, noting that educational exchanges could significantly contribute to the socio-cultural and intellectual development of students from both nations and they would serve as ambassadors of goodwill and cooperation in the future.

The meeting concluded with a strong mutual commitment to further enhancing the role of Sri Lankan teachers in the Maldivian education system. Both parties agreed to continue working closely to ensure that the legacy of educational cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Maldives is not only maintained but also strengthened in the coming years.

As both nations look to the future, this renewed focus on educational collaboration is expected   to yield significant benefits, not only for the education sectors of Sri Lanka and the Maldives but also for the broader relationship between the two countries.
