INSEE Cement successfully launched its inaugural INSEE Industry Conference 2024 on November 07th at the Courtyard by Marriott Colombo, marking a pivotal event for Sri Lanka’s construction industry. This year’s theme, "Driving Excellence through Disruptive Innovation," aimed to catalyse a transformation in the construction sector by embracing transformative technologies and forward-thinking practices that can address both longstanding and emerging challenges.

The conference attracted key stakeholders from Sri Lanka’s construction and infrastructure sectors, including major industrial customers, government stakeholders, contractors, policy developers, engineers, and academics. This diverse assembly created a dynamic platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration, setting the stage for impactful advancements that will drive the nation’s construction landscape toward sustainable growth.

The conference featured sessions led by prominent figures who provided valuable insights on critical topics. Mr. Christopher Joshua, Executive Vice Chairman of Access Engineering PLC, shared his views on “Driving Excellence from Ashes in Construction,” underscoring the importance of discipline, innovation, and resilience as key drivers for sustainable growth. Prof. Rangika Halwatura, Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of Moratuwa, discussed “Innovation towards Sustainability,” introducing next-level construction practices that prioritise eco-friendly solutions and aim to reduce environmental impact.

Reflecting on the significance of the conference, Mr. Nandana Ekanayake, Chairman/CEO of INSEE Cement expressed his optimism for the construction industry’s future. “Sri Lanka's construction industry has faced numerous setbacks in recent years, from economic downturns and policy shifts to the impact of global events such as pandemics and supply chain disruptions. These challenges have led to increased costs, delays in project delivery, and a slowdown in infrastructure development. However, these obstacles also present a unique opportunity to rethink traditional construction practices and embrace innovative approaches that can lead to more efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable outcomes. As we reflect on today’s discussions and look forward, I am encouraged by the shared commitment and vision demonstrated by everyone here. This industry has a crucial role in shaping that future, and I am confident that by working together, we will create a legacy of strength, resilience, and sustainable growth.”

Following the conference, INSEE Cement hosted the Industry Connect 2024 dinner, where keynote speaker Mr. Bhanuka Harishchandra, Founder of Surge Global, kicked off the event with an insightful perspective on innovation. He highlighted that disruptive change is driven not just by technology but by a shift in mindset. Harishchandra stressed the importance of rethinking traditional approaches to meet new challenges, urging the industry to embrace innovative thinking to foster meaningful, lasting transformation. The dinner provided attendees with an invaluable opportunity to strengthen professional relationships and discuss future initiatives aimed at advancing the construction sector in the years ahead.
