World Bank president Ajay Banga to visit Sri Lanka tomorrow

May, 6, 2025

World Bank Group President Ajay Banga is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka on Wednesday, May 7, marking the first presidential visit by a World Bank chief to the island nation in nearly two decades.

The visit, taking place at a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, follows an invitation extended by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during a congratulatory call shortly after his appointment last November.

Mr. Banga’s visit underscores the World Bank Group’s long-standing partnership with Sri Lanka, which spans over 70 years. His agenda will focus on supporting job creation, boosting private investment, and promoting an inclusive and sustainable path to recovery.

During his visit, Banga will hold meetings with President Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, and senior figures from the government and private sector. Discussions are expected to revolve around Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic challenges and opportunities for long-term resilience and growth.

The World Bank Group currently maintains a portfolio of projects in Sri Lanka valued at $2.2 billion, encompassing both public and private sector investments. While recent reports have acknowledged Sri Lanka’s progress, the Bank continues to emphasize the need for poverty reduction and reform continuity to ensure sustained recovery.
