Market Retreats on Monday with Losses in Banking and Diversified Stocks

The Colombo Stock Exchange closed in negative territory on Monday (16), weighed down by losses across key blue-chip counters and a broader market sell-off.

The benchmark All Share Price Index (ASPI) fell by 66.89 points, or 0.38%, to close at 17,360.19, while the more liquid S&P SL20 Index dropped 36.38 points, or 0.70%, ending the day at 5,155.48.

Turnover for the session stood at Rs. 3.15 billion, with a total share volume of approximately 149.5 million shares traded.

Market breadth remained negative, with 124 counters declining compared to 81 gainers. Major contributors to the ASPI’s decline included Hatton National Bank, Commercial Bank, LOLC Holdings, Hayleys and Ceylon Tobacco Company, all of which recorded notable losses during the session.
