Speaking at the event His Excellency Mikhail Kasko, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the Republic of India, concurrently accredited to Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka highlighted the steady rise in passenger movement between Belarus and Sri Lanka over the past few years, noting that this trend reflects both the growing appeal of Sri Lanka as a travel destination for Belarusians and the increasing number of Sri Lankan students pursuing higher education in Belarus. Remarkably, a large proportion of Sri Lankan medical professionals have completed their studies in Belarus, underscoring the strength of academic ties between the two nations. In this context, the launch of the new direct flight represents a natural step forward in deepening cooperation between Minsk and Colombo. The Ambassador extended heartfelt appreciation to Belavia and the Sri Lankan aviation authorities for their dedication and professionalism in making this route a reality.
Speaking at the event Mr. Uladzimir Barkun, Deputy Director General, Marketing and International Affairs, Belavia International Airline “Belavia Airlines marked a historic milestone yesterday with the launch of its regular Minsk–Mattala–Minsk flight, opening a new chapter in Belarusian civil aviation. The event comes on the eve of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Belarus and Sri Lanka, symbolizing a new bridge of friendship and cooperation between the two nations. The inaugural flight achieved a full load factor, underscoring strong demand and confidence in this new route. The service is expected to boost travel and educational exchange, providing easier access for the growing number of Sri Lankan students in Belarus. This marks Belavia’s third long-haul destination, following recent connections to Sanya (China) and Phu Quoc (Vietnam), reaffirming the airline’s commitment to expanding international partnerships and sustainable growth”.
Speaking at the event Mr. Sunil Jayarathne, Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka, commended “the launch of Belavia Airlines’ operations as a timely and positive development for the country’s aviation sector. He noted that the Government of Sri Lanka remains fully committed to facilitating and welcoming new international carriers through progressive regulatory reforms, infrastructure development, and strong institutional support. He emphasized that partnerships such as this not only enhance Sri Lanka’s global connectivity but also contribute significantly to tourism, trade, and the nation’s economic growth”.
