Public Advised to Remain Vigilant Against Online Financial Scams

December, 30, 2025

The public is urged to exercise caution when purchasing goods online, as an increase in financial fraud related to online transactions has been reported recently.

According to information received, fraudsters have been using social media platforms such as Facebook, Ikman, and WhatsApp to sell mobile phones and other electronic devices at highly attractive prices. The image shown above depicts a similar fraudulent incident reported recently.

How to Identify Online Scammers

Scammers commonly follow a similar pattern. They advertise products at prices significantly lower than the prevailing market value, a tactic designed to exploit the buyer’s greed and urgency. They often claim that there is high demand for the item and pressure potential buyers by stating that the product will be sold immediately if a payment is not made.

Victims are then asked to make an advance payment, typically ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 20,000, under the pretext of reserving the item. Once the money is deposited into the provided bank account, the fraudsters cease communication and block the victim’s contact number.

Preventive Measures to Avoid Falling Victim to Such Frauds

Members of the public are strongly advised not to make any payments for goods without physically inspecting and collecting the item. Advance payments for online purchases should be avoided under all circumstances.

It is recommended to use Cash on Delivery services or to conduct transactions through direct, hand-to-hand exchanges. When meeting unknown sellers, individuals should select well-populated and secure public locations and avoid going alone.

Buyers are also encouraged to request a video call to verify that the seller is in possession of the advertised product. Careful attention should be paid not only to the item but also to the identity of the seller, as fraudsters often avoid showing their faces.

Additionally, bank account details provided by sellers should be carefully scrutinized. If there is any suspicion regarding the account holder’s name or number, payments should not be made. Scammers frequently use bank accounts opened using third-party identification details.

The public is advised to remain alert and report any suspected fraudulent activities to the Police promptly.
