BYD Leads Sri Lanka’s Brand-New Vehicle Segment, Moves to Strengthen Network and After-Sales

January, 28, 2026

BYD, together with its authorised distributor John Keells CG Auto, has emerged as the number one brand in the brand-new vehicle segment, marking a new era in sustainable Sri Lankan mobility.

Since vehicle imports resumed one year ago, BYD has rapidly established market leadership, securing the number one position in both the brand-new vehicle and electric vehicle segments, with the SEALION 6 leading the SUV category. This success has been underpinned by steady expansion of BYD's product lineup and retail network in the local market.

“The response to BYD in Sri Lanka has been resoundingly positive. With BYD now emerging as the clear number one player in the brand-new vehicle segment, we are also driving a rapid scaling up of after-sales capabilities, to ensure a seamless, frictionless experience for our valued customers. With these investments we aim to significantly expand service capacity, improve service consistency, and ensure customers receive seamless support wherever they are,” John Keells CG Auto Chief Executive Officer, Charith Panditharatne said.

During the nine-month period following the resumption of vehicle imports, BYD accounted for approximately 37% of all brand-new vehicle registrations in Sri Lanka and over 70% of cumulative electric vehicle registrations, reflecting sustained demand across multiple segments and use cases.

As volumes grew during this period, BYD expanded its local operations under John Keells CG Auto through a phased rollout of models and showrooms to support demand on the ground. The lineup was broadened to include ATTO 3, DOLPHIN, M6, SEAL, SEALION 6, SHARK 6, SEALION 5, ATTO 1, and ATTO 2, alongside the establishment of new showrooms across key markets, supporting the brand’s expanding presence in Sri Lanka.

The next phase places a clear emphasis on strengthening after-sales operations to support a growing vehicle base across the country. A key part of this effort is the opening of BYD’s largest after-sales service centre in Sri Lanka, located in Wattala. The facility is expected to increase service capacity and improve turnaround times across the full passenger vehicle range, while marking a significant operational milestone as BYD completes 10,000 vehicle services locally.

In parallel, John Keells CG Auto has taken over the former Formula World facility in Seeduwa, establishing the largest purpose-built body shop and accident repair centre dedicated to BYD and DENZA vehicles in Sri Lanka. With capacity to accommodate over 100 vehicles at a time, the facility strengthens repair capability and provides a dedicated solution for collision repairs and complex bodywork in the country.

Beyond Colombo, BYD is continuing to expand its footprint with new facilities, including Kandy, Ratnapura, Ampara, Kurunegala, Negombo, Galle, Anuradhapura, and Jaffna extending service access across key regional markets.
