Asiri Health has proudly inaugurated a state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab), together with a fully-equipped Coronary Care Unit (CCU), at Asiri Hospital Matara – marking a major milestone in the availability of advanced private cardiac care within the Southern Province. As a result of this pioneering move, patients in Matara District are empowered to access modern cardiac diagnostic and interventional services, including coronary angiograms, angioplasty and stenting, supported by dedicated critical cardiac care, fulfilling a long-felt need in the region. The new cardiac facilities are designed to bring advanced heart care closer to the community, enabling faster diagnosis and timely intervention when it matters most. By making high-quality cardiac services more accessible and affordable, Asiri Health aims to improve early detection, reduce preventable complications and ensure that patients receive reliable, life-saving treatment without the need for long-distance travel to access quality cardiac care.

The new Cath Lab at Asiri Hospital Matara allows cardiologists to perform minimally invasive procedures to assess and treat blocked or narrowed coronary arteries, while the CCU provides continuous monitoring and specialised post-procedure care for patients recovering from cardiac events. Together, these facilities strengthen Matara’s capacity to manage both emergency and long-term cardiac conditions within the district.

Cardiovascular disease remains one of the leading causes of hospital admissions and mortality in Sri Lanka. Early detection and rapid intervention are widely recognised as critical factors in improving survival rates and quality of life. By establishing advanced cardiac services in Matara, Asiri Health aims to encourage early screening, reduce delays in treatment and ease the physical, emotional and financial burden faced by patients and their families. The new units are equipped with modern medical technology and supported by a multidisciplinary clinical team, including experienced cardiologists, trained critical-care nurses and allied healthcare professionals. The services are delivered within Asiri Health’s established clinical governance framework, ensuring high standards of patient safety, reliability and quality of care.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sandun Rajapaksha Yapa, Director – Operations, Asiri Hospital Matara said: “The opening of the Cath Lab and Coronary Care Unit is a major step forward for healthcare in the Matara District. For many years, patients had to travel long distances to access advanced cardiac treatment, often losing valuable time during critical situations. With these new facilities, we are bringing timely, high-quality and cost-effective heart care closer to the community. Our focus is on patient safety, clinical excellence and improving health outcomes for the people of the Southern Province.”

The new cardiac care facilities also support general practitioners and referral doctors in the region by enabling faster diagnosis, smoother referrals and continuity of care within Matara itself. Patients can now access comprehensive cardiac services locally – from early screening and diagnostics to intervention, recovery and follow-up care.

Asiri Health’s investment in advanced cardiac infrastructure in Matara reflects its broader commitment to strengthening regional healthcare access and reducing disparities in specialised medical services across Sri Lanka. By decentralising high-end clinical capabilities, the Group continues to play a key role in building a more inclusive, resilient and patient-centric healthcare system.
