Norochcholai to the rescue these days, says CEB chairman

Though many areas in the island have experienced rainy weather there has been no considerable rainfall in the catchment areas. This has reduced power generation to 10 percent, says the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) chairman.

By now a huge cost is being incurred due to fuel and coal power generation to meet around 90 percent of the electricity demand, CEB chairman W.B. Ganegala.

“There has been no rainfall within the power plants catchment areas since last October. Whatever said by anyone, we have been able to provide uninterrupted electricity only because of the Norochcholai coal power plant. By now this power plant generates about 600 megawatts of electricity per day,” the CEB chairman added.

Though the country’s normal electricity demand is around 2,000 megawatts daily, it has somewhat decreased due to the New Year holidays.

When AdaderanaBiz inquired whether power cuts could be expected in the near future due to these conditions, Ganegala said there would be no power cuts whatsoever.
