‘Shaping the future through digital payments’

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) will conduct a promotional campaign in Kurunegala on 20 and 21 February 2026 to raise awareness of digital payments among the business community and the general public. The campaign will be held with the participation of Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of CBSL, together with other senior officials.

Under the theme “Shaping the Future through Digital Payments,” CBSL launched a nationwide digital payments promotion campaign in 2025 in collaboration with financial institutions and other key stakeholders. The programme covered the Hambantota, Nuwara Eliya, and Dambulla areas. These initiatives successfully created awareness among large audiences and enabled businesses and members of the public to experience the convenience of digital payment methods.

As a continuation of this initiative, a city-wide public engagement programme will be held in Kurunegala over the two-day period. The campaign will involve CBSL, Licensed Banks, Licensed Finance Companies, Licensed Operators of mobile phone-based e-money systems, and LankaPay (Pvt) Ltd, the operator of the national retail payment system.

Participating financial institutions will assist businesses in onboarding as LANKAQR merchants and support members of the public in registering for digital payment services, including mobile payment applications and online banking facilities. Leading retail establishments in Kurunegala will also participate in the campaign to encourage customers to adopt digital payment methods.

CBSL invites the public and the business community to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their understanding of digital payments and experience the convenience and security they offer, with personalised guidance and assistance from participating financial institutions.
