Dubai Airport Goes From 1,200 Daily Flights To 20 In Historic Slowdown Due To Iran Strikes

Dubai's airport, which typically operates around the clock with relentless precision, is now facing extraordinary restrictions, as airspace access has been severely limited

NDTV - Travel through the Middle East is facing unprecedented disruption at the moment, with widespread airspace closures triggering cancellations, diversions and mass uncertainty for passengers across continents. Among the worst hit is Dubai International Airport, one of the busiest aviation hubs in the world, which has effectively ground to a halt.

As regional tensions escalate, multiple countries have shut their airspace, forcing airlines to reroute or suspend operations altogether. The ripple effect has been immediate and severe. Flights from Europe, Asia and India have either been cancelled mid-route or turned back after hours in the air. For thousands of passengers, journeys have been abruptly cut short.

Dubai's airport, which typically operates around the clock with relentless precision, is now facing extraordinary restrictions. With airspace access severely limited, both arrivals and departures have dropped to historic lows.

 Only 16 Take-Offs And 4 Landings

Data from March 2, 2026, paints a stark picture. According to Flightradar24, just 20 total aircraft movements were recorded at Dubai International Airport that day.

  • 16 take-offs
  • 4 landings

To put that into perspective, the airport usually handles well over a thousand movements daily. In the previous week alone, the airport recorded 5,654 total movements, including 2,830 take-offs and 2,824 landings.

On February 27, for instance, there were 1,257 total movements in a single day. On February 26, the number stood at 1,240, and February 25 saw 1,236 movements.

Against those figures, March 2's total of 20 movements is a near standstill. Among the 4 arrivals were, according to Flightradar24:

  • EK501 from Mumbai (BOM), operated by Emirates (A388 A6-EVP), which landed at 5:11 AM
  • FZ968 from Baku (GYD), operated by flydubai (B738 A6-FEP), landed at 9:52 AM
  • Another flydubai service from Baku (B738 A6-FGG)
  • FZ970 from Baku (GYD), operated by flydubai (B38M A6-FPI), landed at 8:50 AM in Dubai on March 2.

Departures were equally sparse. Among the 16 flights that took off, one was to Leipzig, which departed at 8:41 PM, and another was to Chennai, operated by Emirates, which departed at 9:25 PM.

For an airport that routinely dispatches hundreds of aircraft in a single day, these isolated departures reflect an aviation ecosystem operating in crisis mode.

Diversions And Cancellations Continue

The disruption has continued into today, with Indian routes also affected.

Emirates flights to Dubai from Chennai, Delhi and Bengaluru were all diverted back to their origin cities in India.

Only EK501 from Mumbai successfully landed in Dubai. Meanwhile, EK525 from Hyderabad, which was en route to Dubai, was also cancelled.

This is a dramatic shift from normal operations, where multiple daily services operate between Indian metros and Dubai, carrying thousands of passengers for business, tourism and transit.
