The arrival of a newborn should be a moment of joy, yet for many parents, the need for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) support can bring anxiety and uncertainty. Recognising both the medical and emotional requirements of families during this critical time, Joseph Fraser Hospital has announced the enhancement of its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), introducing advanced neonatal technology together with a more personalised, family-centred approach to care.
Commenting on the initiative, Dr Dilrukshi Sayyakkara, Head of Medical Services, said the vision behind the enhanced NICU was to combine clinical excellence with meaningful parental involvement. “This unit was designed to encourage active parental participation from the very beginning, as we recognise that parents are essential to the healing journey. Significant investments in advanced equipment and improved infrastructure have created a safer and more responsive environment for our tiniest patients. Above all, this NICU represents our promise to mothers to provide truly personalised care. Mothers whose babies have received NICU care in this supportive setting have reported feeling less anxious and more confident during recovery, while also experiencing fewer lactation challenges, an issue commonly associated with early separation from their newborns,” she said.
The upgraded NICU is equipped with modern neonatal technology to support premature and high-risk infants who require specialised medical attention. This includes advanced ventilator and respiratory support systems for babies needing assistance with breathing, continuous neonatal monitoring solutions that enable precise observation of vital signs, and state-of-the-art incubators designed to provide optimal thermal regulation and protection.
Led by experienced consultant neonatologists and supported by dedicated 1 to 1 nursing care, the unit ensures that every newborn receives close monitoring and highly responsive medical intervention during the most critical stages of care.
A key highlight of the enhanced facility is its personalised, family-centred care model. Moving beyond the traditional NICU setting where parental access may be limited, the hospital has introduced a more inclusive approach that allows parents to remain closely involved in their baby’s early care journey. Where clinically appropriate, the infant’s incubator can be positioned near the mother, enabling families to maintain early bonding and emotional connection while the baby continues to receive intensive medical care.
The NICU enhancement is part of wider upgrades to the hospital’s maternal and newborn care services. These include a fully equipped High Dependency Unit (HDU) for mothers requiring closer monitoring, a modernised blood bank with enhanced safety protocols, upgraded labour suites for vaginal deliveries and an advanced operating theatre for caesarean and other obstetric procedures.
By combining advanced medical expertise with compassionate, family-centred care, Joseph Fraser Hospital continues to strengthen its position as a comprehensive centre for maternal and neonatal healthcare.
