On 23 March 2026, the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Sri Lanka held an informal briefing session in the UK Parliament to discuss Sri Lanka's economic outlook and UK-Sri Lanka relations. The objective of the event was to discuss analytical reports on debt distress and economic transformation in Sri Lanka by ODI Global - a leading UK based public affairs think tank. The session was chaired by the Chair of the APPG, Andrew Snowdon MP.
In his opening remarks, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Nimal Senadheera, underscored Sri Lanka’s progress in stabilising its economy following the 2022 debt crisis and stressed the importance of continued collaboration with international partners, multilateral institutions, and bilateral partners including the UK, while noting the Government’s ongoing efforts to address challenges arising from current global crises.
Visiting Senior Fellow at ODI Global, Dr. Ganeshan Wignaraja and Professor Dirk Willem te Velde of ODI Global contributed to the discussion by outlining Sri Lanka's economic recovery, associated opportunities for strengthening resilience, as well as areas where international cooperation and policy support could further advance the country's economic transformation. Dr. Ganeshan Wignaraja further highlighted the growing opportunities for UK investment in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy and financial sectors, emphasising their potential for long-term growth and collaboration. Senior Fellow at ODI Global, Phyllis Papadavid emphasised that macroeconomic stability, structural reforms, and investor confidence are key to sustainable growth in Sri Lanka.
