Foreign Reserves drop below USD 7 billion again

In April 2026, the official reserve assets held by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka have once again fallen below the USD 7 billion mark.

Accordingly, the official reserve assets, which stood at USD 7,026 million at the end of March 2026, declined to USD 6,759 million by the end of April 2026, a drop of 3.8%.

The main component of the Official Reserve Assets, foreign currency reserves, decreased from USD 6,800 million to USD 6,505 million during April, recording a 4.3% decline.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank’s gold reserves also fell from USD 222 million to USD 219 million, a decrease of 1.2%, according to the latest data released by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

For the first time in 5½ years, Sri Lanka’s official reserve assets crossed the $7 billion threshold in February 2026, reaching USD 7,284 million by the end of that month.

However, the reserves declined by 3.5% in March to USD 7,026 million, and the downward trend continued for a second consecutive month in April.
