Kelani Valley Plantations Unveils E-Waste to Jewellery Transformation Initiative with SPJ Creation

May, 11, 2026

Kelani Valley Plantations PLC (KVPL), a leading regional plantation company under the Hayleys Plantations sector, is redefining sustainability through innovative circular solutions. In partnership with SPJ Creation, KVPL has launched a strategic initiative to transform electronic waste into sustainable jewelry and creative, value-added products. The collaboration was formalized through the signing of a MOU on 12th March 2026 at Kelani Valley Plantations, marking a pioneering step in Sri Lanka’s transition toward circular economy practices and low-carbon innovation.

By converting e-waste into commercially viable, aesthetically appealing products, the initiative promotes green entrepreneurship, women engagement, supports circular economy principles, and fosters community engagement. It also creates new livelihood opportunities by empowering local artisans and designers to participate in sustainable production systems.

Electronic waste is an escalating environmental concern both globally and in Sri Lanka, where over 20,000 metric tons are generated annually with limited management systems in place. In response, KVPL’s initiative offers a progressive and timely solution by transforming this growing waste stream into a source of sustainable value. Aligned with KVPL’s sustainability agenda, the initiative supports its focus on responsible waste management, environmental stewardship, and circular economy practices, while supporting carbon reduction, biodiversity conservation, and efficient resource use.

“This partnership highlights our deliberate pursuit of world-class sustainability standards, where innovation and responsibility converge to address Sri Lanka’s evolving e-waste challenge. Through this initiative we are strengthening our commitment to responsible waste management while catalysing a new frontier of sustainable design, creative enterprise, and long-term environmental value creation. It also reinforces our broader vision of embedding sustainability into every layer of our business, creating measurable impact for communities, industries, and the environment at large.” KVPL, Director / CEO, Mr. Senaka Alwattegama noted.

This initiative focuses on collecting, repurposing, and upcycling discarded electronic materials into value-added, eco-friendly products, transforming waste into a resource of economic and environmental value. By bridging sustainability with design innovation, the partnership introduces a scalable model that aligns local action with global sustainability imperatives.

SPJ Creation, Managing Director, Pavani Chandrasekara added, “At the heart of our work is a simple belief that what is often discarded can be transformed into something meaningful, beautiful, and valuable. We are truly grateful to KVPL for their strong commitment to sustainability and for trusting us as a partner in bringing this vision to life. Working together allows us to expand the boundaries of creative upcycling while delivering real environmental and social impact through thoughtful design and craftsmanship.”

MOU was exchanged between Mr. Senaka Alawattegema (Director/CEO) of KVPL and Ms. Pavani Chadrasekara (Managing Director) of SPJ Creation

Demonstrating a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible innovation, this collaboration positions KVPL at the forefront of sustainable transformation within Sri Lanka’s plantation and corporate sectors. As electronic waste emerges as one of the fastest-growing global environmental challenges, the initiative delivers a timely response that supports national sustainability priorities while also aligning with international frameworks, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production.

Through this collaboration, KVPL strengthens its leadership in advancing a closed-loop, sustainable model within Sri Lanka’s plantation sector. The initiative calls on stakeholders, industry partners, policymakers, and consumers to adopt circularity as a core principle of the country’s emerging green economy, where collective awareness and action will be essential to driving meaningful environmental progress and sustainable development.
