JKCG Says No BYD LCs Opened Ahead of Vehicle Import Surcharge Announcement

May, 22, 2026

John Keells CG Auto (JKCG) has rejected allegations that it had prior knowledge of the temporary surcharge imposed on imported motor vehicles before the government’s recent Gazette notification.

In a statement issued today (22), the company said claims circulating publicly suggested that certain vehicle importers, including JKCG, had established Letters of Credit (LCs) on the day immediately preceding Gazette notification No. 2488/56 dated 15 May 2026.

However, JKCG categorically denied the allegations, stating that it had no prior knowledge of the surcharge and had not established any Letters of Credit for BYD vehicles on the day before the Gazette notification.

The company further stated that its most recent orders relating to BYD vehicles were placed between March and 30 April 2026, adding that no Letters of Credit had been established after that date, including during May 2026.

JKCG noted that, as a major participant in the motor vehicle market, it places orders in the ordinary course of business on a regular basis.

The company also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, good governance, and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations while continuing to serve customers within the prevailing regulatory framework.
