The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) is intensifying efforts to unlock the country's vast graphite potential by promoting value addition, expanding international market access, and strengthening partnerships with leading industry players. As part of this initiative, EDB officials recently undertook a field visit to witness the complete graphite mining and processing operations of Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC, one of the world's leading producers of premium natural vein graphite.

The visit provided first-hand insights into the entire graphite value chain from underground mining and ore extraction to processing, grading, purification and export preparation. The observations will support the EDB in formulating strategies to enhance Sri Lanka's mineral export performance and position the country as a preferred global supplier of high-value graphite products.

The initiative is closely aligned with the National Export Development Plan (NEDP), which has identified minerals and mineral-based products as one of Sri Lanka's thrust export sectors. The NEDP recognises that Sri Lanka's unique mineral resources, particularly its world-renowned vein graphite, offer significant opportunities to diversify exports, attract investment, and generate higher foreign exchange earnings through value addition.

Sri Lanka is the only country in the world that commercially produces natural crystalline vein graphite, renowned for its exceptionally high carbon purity and superior crystalline structure. These unique characteristics make Sri Lankan graphite highly sought after for advanced industrial applications, lubricants, carbon brushers, brake pads, refractories and emerging graphene technologies.

Bogala Graphite Lanka PLC, with more than 160 years of mining expertise, has established an international reputation for supplying premium quality graphite to discerning global markets. The company continues to invest in modern processing technologies and sustainable mining practices, demonstrating the potential for Sri Lanka to move beyond exporting raw minerals towards high-value, technology-driven mineral products.

During the visit, EDB officials engaged with the company's management to discuss on the way forward and the barriers in the graphite industry.

The EDB believes that strengthening collaboration between government agencies, mining companies, research institutions and international technology partners will be essential to unlocking the full potential of Sri Lanka's graphite industry. Investments in research and development, modern processing technologies and international marketing are expected to enhance the competitiveness of Sri Lankan graphite in global markets.

By leveraging the country's unique natural vein graphite deposits and further encouraging greater value addition, the EDB aims to significantly increase export revenue from the mineral sector while supporting Sri Lanka's broader national export diversification strategy. The initiative is expected to contribute to sustainable economic growth, create high-skilled employment opportunities, and reinforce Sri Lanka's reputation as a global source of premium graphite and advanced mineral products.
