Hayleys Advantis, the transportation and logistics arm of the Hayleys Group, in collaboration with the National Council for Road Safety (NCRS), recently launched “100 for 100”, a national rider safety movement aimed at strengthening motorcycle safety across Sri Lanka through defensive riding training and practical road safety interventions. The programme has a national ambition of mobilising 100 organisations, with each engaging 100 motorcycle riders, creating a potential reach of 10,000 riders across the country.

The launch comes at a time when motorcycle safety remains a critical national concern. In 2024, Sri Lanka recorded 2,403 fatal road accident cases, with motorcycles accounting for 34% of vehicles involved in road accidents. Motorcycle riders represented 31% of road user fatalities, making them the second-largest road user fatality group after pedestrians.

As a transportation and logistics company, Hayleys Advantis recognises its responsibility to contribute to safer roads for the people and communities connected to its operations. This led the company to initiate “100 for 100” as a practical and scalable approach to reaching motorcycle riders with safety education and training.

Under the programme, each participating organisation will identify 100 riders from among its employees, operational riders, delivery partners or regular motorcycle commuters. These riders will receive defensive riding education and related safety guidance covering areas such as hazard anticipation, road discipline, responsible riding behaviour, helmet and personal protective equipment awareness, and crash prevention.

Advantis is leading by example, commencing the initiative with its domestic express subsidiary, Citypak, which was the first to put the programme into practice. With over 30 years of experience in Sri Lanka’s domestic express sector, 45+ branches and more than two million shipments delivered annually, Citypak provides a strong starting point for Advantis’ commitment to embedding safer riding practices within its own operations.

Speaking on the initiative, Ruwan Waidyaratne, Managing Director of Hayleys Advantis Group, said, “Motorcycle riders are a large and varied group of road users, but unlike many other vehicle categories, there is no single network through which we can consistently reach them with road safety education and training. We saw an opportunity to use workplaces as practical touchpoints to reach riders within their own networks. This led us to develop “100 for 100” in collaboration with the NCRS, enabling organisations to take an active role in promoting safer riding. We hope to see organisations across the country take up the challenge and help us build a movement for safer riding across Sri Lanka.”

The initiative invites companies, institutions and delivery platforms across Sri Lanka to join the movement by nominating motorcycle riders from within their organisations and networks. By bringing more organisations into “100 for 100”, the programme aims to build momentum towards a stronger culture of responsible riding and road safety across the country.
