The future competitiveness of Sri Lanka's businesses will depend not only on sound management but on the strength, vision and effectiveness of the country's boardrooms. That message resonated strongly as the Sri Lanka Corporate Director Summit 2026, organised by the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors (SLID), successfully concluded recently, bringing together 475 participants, including chairpersons, corporate directors, CEOs, regulators, policymakers, investors, governance professionals, academics and senior executives for what has become one of Sri Lanka's most significant governance and board leadership forums.
Held under the theme, "Future-Ready Sri Lankan Boards – From Compliance to Sustainable Growth," the Summit brought together renowned international and local speakers from Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, India, Thailand, the Maldives and other global markets, strengthening the growing significance of board leadership in navigating an increasingly complex business environment. Additionally, the Summit reaffirmed its long -term commitment to advancing director development and governance excellence in Sri Lanka, marking a significant milestone in the SLID's 25th anniversary.
Throughout the Summit, speakers consistently highlighted that governance can no longer be viewed simply as regulatory compliance. Strategic leadership, responsible oversight of emerging technology, strengthening organisational resilience, safeguarding the corporate reputation, developing talent and culture, managing cybersecurity risks, and producing sustainable long-term value are all expected of modern boards.
In an era shaped by artificial intelligence, digital transformation, geopolitical uncertainty, environmental, social, and governance (ESG) priorities, and shifting stakeholder expectations, the programme featured keynote addresses, panel discussions, a Directors' Dialogue, and interactive audience engagement sessions that explored the rapidly changing responsibilities of boards. Discussions shifted from theory to real-world boardroom experiences, providing directors with actionable advice from internationally respected business leaders, governance experts, regulators, and experienced practitioners.
Commenting on the Summit, Dinesh Weerakkody, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors, said: “The conversation must now travel beyond the Summit into our boardrooms. To help carry that thinking forward, SLID intends to capture the key insights and perspectives emerging from the deliberations in a Board Governance Insights Handbook, turning a day of dialogue into a reference for directors navigating the challenges ahead. "Effective boards are the foundation of strong institutions, which are necessary for Sri Lanka's economic transformation. We are grateful to all of the participants, partners, and distinguished speakers who helped make this summit a significant forum for influencing corporate leadership in Sri Lanka going forward."
Anitra Perera, Chief Executive Officer of Sri Lanka Institute of Directors, added: "As SLID celebrates 25 years of promoting corporate governance and director excellence, this Summit represents our ongoing dedication to equipping directors with the leadership skills, practical insights, and global perspectives necessary to navigate an increasingly complex world. We are deeply grateful to our speakers, partners, sponsors, and participants for helping to create a landmark summit that will have a lasting impact on boardrooms well beyond the event itself.”
Charaka Perera, Summit Chair of the Sri Lanka Corporate Director Summit 2026, noted: "The conversations we observed showed that open dialogue, continuous learning, and effective leadership are the foundations of future-ready boards. Our goal was to establish a national platform where directors could question perspectives, share experiences, and improve the standard of boardroom decision-making throughout Sri Lanka, not just to host a conference.”
Highlighting the broader significance of the discussions, Sutheash Balasubramaniam, Technical Chair of the Sri Lanka Corporate Director Summit 2026, said: “The true measure of this Summit will not be the conversations we had, but the decisions directors make in their boardrooms thereafter. Compliance remains fundamental, but future-ready boards must go further: shaping strategy, building trust, embracing innovation and creating sustainable long-term value. That is how boardrooms can strengthen organisations and, collectively, Sri Lanka’s competitiveness on the global stage.”
Together with the numerous sponsors, corporate partners, and supporting organisations whose collaboration made the event a success, the Summit also acknowledged the invaluable support of Deloitte Sri Lanka & Maldives, the Strategic Partner, and LYNEAR Wealth Management, the Title Sponsor.
Looking ahead, SLID stated that the conversation started at the Summit will continue through its ongoing director education initiatives, especially the SLID Board Leadership Programme, which will strengthen the Institute's dedication to creating stronger, globally connected boards that can support resilient organisations, increased investor confidence, and Sri Lanka's long-term economic growth.
