There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about eating well beside the sea. Bare feet in the sand, salt in the air, a table within sight of the Indian Ocean, and nowhere to be in a hurry.
At Table by Nyne – The Beach, set within Anuprit by Nyne Hotels in Bentota, that simplicity is precisely the point. Conceived by Nyne Hotels founder Nayantara Fonseka together with Executive Chef Shantha Peiris, this beachfront dining destination moves easily from breakfast through lunch and sundowners to dinner, with the ocean providing the backdrop throughout.
Open to both resident guests and walk-in visitors, it is less a conventional hotel restaurant than a place around which a day at the beach can unfold.
Non-resident guests have the opportunity to make a day of it. Day guests have access to beach towels, showers and washroom facilities, with a minimum food and beverage spend of LKR 7,500 nett per person, fully redeemable against food and beverages enjoyed during their visit.
Guests joining solely for Breakfast, Lunch, Sundowners or Dinner are, of course, welcome to dine without a minimum spend.
Morning begins lightly. Green Goddess Smoothie Bowls, Chia Pudding and fresh tropical fruit sit alongside more indulgent choices, including a distinctly Sri Lankan Soufflé Omelette.
By lunchtime, the mood changes. The sun is higher, the ocean brighter and the menu more generous. Fresh seafood naturally takes centre stage, joined by dishes inspired by the flavours and produce of the island.
Then comes that particular hour for which Sri Lanka’s west coast seems purpose-built: sundown. As daylight disappears, The Beach becomes something else entirely. Dinner can be as relaxed or as celebratory as the occasion demands, but the most memorable experiences are those built around fire, seafood and the sand beneath your feet.
The Seafood BBQ, at LKR 23,100 nett per person, turns the evening into a feast by the ocean, celebrating the day’s seafood with the theatre and aroma of the grill. For those who prefer meat, BBQ on The Beach, at LKR 22,950 nett per person, is designed for a minimum of four guests, a convivial, generous dinner made for sharing around the table. Then there is The Island Table, at LKR 16,500 nett per person. An abundant table of local flavours served in a setting that could hardly feel more connected to the island.
For committed crab lovers, the Crab Feast centres on one kilogram of Sea Crab or Mud Crab Curry for two, prepared with eight hours’ notice.
Vegetarian and plant-based dining is not treated as an afterthought. Sri Lanka’s extraordinary natural repertoire of vegetables, coconut, fruit, herbs and spices gives the kitchen plenty to work with. The result is a menu that feels inclusive without announcing itself as such, fresh, generous and appropriate to a tropical beach setting.
Table by Nyne – The Beach is not trying to make coastal dining complicated. It is good food, Sri Lankan warmth and one of Bentota’s greatest luxuries: the freedom to spend an entire day beside the sea.
