Senok Trade Combine (Private) Limited (Senok Group), one of Sri Lanka’s leading diversified privately owned business groups, celebrates its 47th anniversary this year, marking nearly five decades of enterprise, innovation and contribution to the nation’s economic development.

Founded in 1979 by Mr. Noel Selvanayagam with the establishment of Senok Travels Ltd., Senok began its journey in the travel industry before expanding into construction machinery and subsequently diversifying into multiple sectors. Over the years, the Group has grown into a business with more than 40 companies and interests spanning construction and heavy machinery, automobiles and commercial vehicles, renewable energy, manufacturing and aviation, with an expanding presence in international markets.

Mr. Gerard Fernando, Managing Director of SENOK, has played a significant role in the Group’s growth and development, providing leadership across many of its principal businesses, operations and major projects over the years.

Construction and heavy machinery remain among the key foundations of Senok’s business. machinery supplied and supported by the Group has contributed to major infrastructure projects across Sri Lanka, including roads, irrigation schemes, hydropower projects, precast construction projects, harbours and airports. Today, Senok represents internationally recognised brands such as Kobelco, JCB, HAMM and Airman, supported by comprehensive sales, after-sales service, spare parts and technical capabilities.

Senok has also established a strong presence in the automotive and commercial vehicle sectors. Its current portfolio includes CHANGAN, DEEPAL, NEVO, GWM, FOTON and EICHER, covering passenger vehicles, SUVs, pickups, commercial vehicles and new-energy mobility solutions. Through Western Automobile Assembly (WAA) in Kuliyapitiya, the Group has further invested in local vehicle assembly, contributing to local value addition, employment generation, technology transfer and skills development.

Another significant milestone in SENOK’s history was its pioneering role in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy sector. Senok was among the first to develop commercial wind power in the country, helping introduce wind energy well before renewable energy became a national priority. Its energy portfolio has since expanded to include hydro and solar power, with capabilities covering project development, engineering, construction, commissioning, operations and maintenance.

Aviation represents another specialised area of Senok’s operations. In 2012, the Group entered the aviation sector with the establishment of Senok Air, operating Airbus AS350 B3 multi-role helicopters for specialised services including passenger transportation, aerial filming, mapping and surveying, and medical evacuations. Supported by engineering and maintenance capabilities and an experienced flying crew, Senok Air has developed a specialised helicopter operation serving commercial and critical-response requirements across Sri Lanka.

Senok’s growth has also extended beyond Sri Lanka, with an expanding international presence including operations and projects in the Maldives and East and West Africa. These overseas ventures have enabled the Group to take its expertise in construction, machinery, commercial vehicles and other sectors to international markets.

While much of SENOK’s growth has taken place away from the public spotlight, its businesses have remained closely connected to Sri Lanka’s development for decades. From supporting major infrastructure projects and pioneering renewable energy to introducing international technologies, developing local manufacturing capabilities and creating skilled employment, Senok has continued to contribute to the country’s economic and industrial progress.

As Senok enters its 48th year, the Group remains focused on identifying new opportunities, entering emerging industries, undertaking ambitious projects and building sustainable businesses for the long term.
