Preserving a cherished legacy while embracing a new era of nature, adventure and hospitality
The iconic Kithulgala Rest House, a much-loved landmark in Sri Lanka’s hospitality history, has been reimagined as EKHO Kithulgala, becoming the seventh property under the growing EKHO Hotels & Resorts portfolio. The transformation marks a new chapter for this historic riverside retreat, preserving its nostalgic charm and heritage while introducing refreshed accommodation and improved facilities for the modern traveller.
For generations, the Kithulgala Rest House has been a familiar destination for travellers journeying through Sri Lanka’s lush wet zone. Whether as a scenic stopover, a peaceful riverside escape or a base for exploring the surrounding wilderness, the property has created lasting memories for countless visitors. Its transition to EKHO Kithulgala seeks to carry this legacy forward, retaining the character and sense of familiarity that have long defined the rest house experience.
The property now features 20 refreshed guest rooms, comprising of Garden View and River View accommodation, complemented by improvements to its public spaces. While enhancing guest comfort, the transformation has been approached with sensitivity towards the property's heritage, ensuring that the essence of the former rest house remains an integral part of the EKHO Kithulgala experience.
Situated along the banks of the Kelani River, EKHO Kithulgala occupies a remarkable location surrounded by tropical rainforest and rich biodiversity. For decades, the former Kithulgala Rest House has welcomed birdwatchers, naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts, establishing itself as a familiar base for those exploring the region’s exceptional birdlife.
This longstanding association continues as EKHO Kithulgala positions itself as an ideal base camp for birdwatching and nature exploration. With easy access to the Makandawa Forest Reserve, a renowned habitat for endemic and resident bird species, guests can venture into the surrounding rainforest for early morning birdwatching excursions, guided nature walks and immersive wildlife experiences.
Beyond birdwatching, Kithulgala is widely recognised as one of Sri Lanka’s premier destinations for white-water rafting. EKHO Kithulgala enjoys a particularly distinctive advantage, with the rafting route ending directly at the property, allowing adventure enthusiasts to conclude their river experience at the doorstep of their accommodation.
The destination also holds a special place in cinematic history through its association with the Academy Award-winning film The Bridge on the River Kwai, filmed in the Kithulgala area during the 1950s, adding another fascinating dimension to the region’s heritage.
The opening of EKHO Kithulgala follows the recent transformation of the former Belihuloya Rest House into EKHO Belihuloya, further strengthening the brand’s presence in Sri Lanka’s nature and adventure tourism landscape.
Together, these properties reflect a broader commitment to revitalising Sri Lanka’s iconic rest houses, preserving their historical significance while introducing contemporary comforts and destination-led experiences.
More than a change of name, EKHO Kithulgala represents the continuation of a cherished legacy. It is a place where generations of memories remain part of the experience, where nature and adventure are never far away, and where the spirit of the iconic Kithulgala Rest House lives on.
A familiar destination. A renewed experience. A new chapter as EKHO Kithulgala.
