Lanka Hospitals surpasses its own benchmark on achievements, following the recent accreditation by Joint Commission International (JCI)

Lanka Hospitals, the foremost healthcare provider with a proven record of underlying achievements, recently announced the successful completion of 100 cochlear implant surgeries. Lanka Hospitals being the pioneer of cochlear implant surgeries, announced that the 100th patient, a Maldivian national is now recovering from the operation which was a complete success. Being accredited by the Joint Commission International and marking its territory as one of the world’s best hospitals, Lanka Hospitals assures its commitment to surpass its promise of delivering excellent healthcare facilities and patient care.

Speaking about the ENT centre the CEO of Lanka Hospitals Dr. Lakith Peiris said, “Cochlear implants; one of the key areas of medical expertise at Lanka Hospitals is one sector which generates medical tourism to Sri Lanka, attracting many foreigners for treatment due to our cost effective, yet superior quality healthcare services and facilities, in comparison to other countries in the region. In Sri Lanka too there is a growing demand for this surgery due to the scarcity of facilities in state sector hospitals and we strongly believe that, as a private sector hospital with the best of clinical care and state-of-the-art technology to support any type of surgery we are fully equipped to bridge the clinical care gap that exists.”

Dr. Peiris further stated, “At Lanka Hospitals we thrive to excel in our achievements every day. The success this centre has experienced over the years is solely due to the dedication and experience of our staff who contribute with care and knowledge to provide the best possible clinical outcome to patients. I congratulate the team for their efforts as it’s not only considered to be an achievement by the hospital but also as a personal accomplishment by each and every member of the team.”

The ENT centre at Lanka Hospitals is headed by Dr. Devanand Jha, Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon who has performed over 5000 ENT, head and neck surgeries in Sri Lanka and was also instrumental in introducing Cochlear Implants and Bone Anchored hearing aids in adults to the country.

“Cochlear implants can help establish hearing in patients who are profoundly deaf due to damaged sensory receptors in the auditory portion of the inner ear (Cochlear). Children who are born deaf and individuals who have undergone auditory damage due to bomb blasts and viral infections can benefit immensely from Cochlear implant surgery. A cochlear implant provides ‘electrical hearing’ where the sound is transmitted directly to the cochlear by bypassing through the outer and middle ear. Contrary to popular belief this surgery should be performed on children who are born deaf as early as possible, ideally between the ages of 1 and 2. Following the surgery, patients should undergo Auditory Verbal Therapy, a 2-3 year training programme which instructs them on how to listen and speak using the new device which has been implanted. During their formative years, the chances of a child acquiring speech and language remain very high hence delaying this surgery could have serious adverse effects on the child’s ability to hear and develop speech,” Dr. Jha concluded.
