During the past year, the restaurant and delivery industries joined forces to ensure vital supply lines remained open. Through the pandemic, there were several entrepreneurs who stood resolute and ensured they were there to cater to the needs of the people. Here are two passionate women, the heroes of their families, who have paved their own path and thrived on the Uber Eats platform.
Mrs. Afraz, Savemo:
“It has been a little over a year since we joined the Uber Eats platform and we have been able to expand to three outlets -- located in Colombo 10, Dehiwela and now Wattala. We started out as a home-based business, which we still continue to this date. The three outlets are run by our family and friends, and my husband also supported immensely to overlook the business operation. Uber Eats has been our life partner especially during the pandemic, where we witnessed our sales triple, resulting in improved livelihoods of many families at Savemo.”
Mrs. Amna Ashraf Anas, Kattoo Mittoo Achcharu Hut:
“I am a mother of two, and my husband is my business partner. We’ve been running this business for close to 10 years now, and we’ve been on Uber Eats for nearly 2-and-a-half years.
Before partnering with the platform, we were a simple home-based business making deliveries for over seven years, but after Uber Eats entered our lives, we received great exposure and were able to expand to two more locations.
I’ve seen a lot of women empowered through Uber Eats. You get many women-run businesses on Uber Eats now and it has definitely helped the Sri Lankan community. It has provided a source of earning to delivery partners and provided an opportunity for most women to start up their business with ease. Since Uber Eats arrived, it has really helped bring out a lot of hidden talent.”
