CAPAZITY: Providing Value to the Most Deserving Demography in Sri Lanka – Senior Citizens

March, 15, 2023

Capazity (Pvt) Ltd., Sri Lankas first and only organisation catering to the varied needs of senior citizens of Sri Lanka was launched on the 14th of March 2023 with the presence of its founders, advisory board members, clients, and media personalities.

Senior citizens are the most deserving community in any country. They have contributed tremendously towards the economy and society. Individuals retire from their careers, not from their lives and they continue to contribute to society in many ways. Whilst this sounds rather straightforward, in reality the transition can be tough. Capazity is a social enterprise driven by the desire to create impact through a range of services and solutions catered to senior citizens so that their next years in life will be the best.

Capazity, is founded by three like-minded individuals with years of corporate and social enterprise experience. They are Nirmal De Silva - Award Winning Business Leader, Entrepreneur, and board member of several leading companies, Sanjeew Perera - Technology Expert, Entrepreneur, Innovation Specialist as well as Ecosystem Enabler and Ramzeena Morseth Lye - Marketing Expert, Entrepreneur, and Skills Trainer. For the founders, the inspiration to initiate Capazity is considered their collective responsibility for society and not a mere choice.

The purpose of the organisation is to empower Sri Lankan senior citizens, both economically and socially. The company aims to address five of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals; Good Health and Well-being, Access to Quality education, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, Reduced Inequalities and to bring about social impact in the process.

Capazity leverages technology for data driven decision making and utilises some of the most innovative technology to arrive at simple, easy to use solutions for senior citizens. Service excellence and continuous improvement are at the core of the operating philosophy. For this reason, Capazity has partnered with local universities and international research entities.

A rapidly ageing population creates a number of challenges. Compared to the other countries in the South Asian and Southeast Asian region, Sri Lanka’s population is ageing fast. At present 13% of the population are senior citizens (above 60 years of age) and this will increase to 27% in the next 7 years. This is a situation which requires urgent attention.  Unfortunately, the national focus is not on this segment. This segment faces several challenges which need to be addressed. For example, improvements in terms of healthcare and psychological wellbeing need to be made. The rising cost of living has also had a significant impact on the savings and income of senior citizens who are now unable to afford the lifestyle which they worked for their entire lives.

With these in mind, Capazity will initially offer three sets of solutions that will aid senior citizens and improve their quality of life.

Capazity Impact - a range of services and solutions to individuals as well as companies, which will help senior citizens remain competitive in their careers through education and upskilling.

Capazity Benefits – a simple and user-friendly online platform to connect senior citizens with a variety of merchants so that they can avail themselves to special offers, discounts and value-added services.

Capazity Care – focuses on providing care for senior citizens. Paid care facilities will be made available through a range of cluster-based locations with world-class independent and assisted living services to senior citizens in a welcoming, vibrant and future driven environment keeping social engagement and an active lifestyle in mind.

The initiative has already attracted the initial round of investment through an Australian based investor and the team hopes to achieve success through a mindset change and collaboration with other like-minded individuals and organisations so that the journey and the transition of senior citizens will be an interesting one.
