The 25 percent electricity traffic reduction effective September would be to all domestic users whether the consumption is below or over 300 units per month, said Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella during the media briefing to announce Cabinet decisions a short while ago.
He added that news reports stating that the 25 percent reduction would be only to those consuming less than 300 units per month were false and misleading.
In response to a question from a journalist whether the fuel surcharge on electricity bills would be removed, Minister Rambukwella said the government is unable to do so since it still buys electricity from private power generators. Once the government stops its purchase of power from the private sector this fuel surcharge could be removed.
