It has been proposed to establish a vocational training center in Matara similar to the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute in Ratmalana with the Financial support of the Government of Germany aimed at providing institutional and industrial training to youth in Matara and the adjoining Districts in the fields of building and automobile repairs and maintenance, refrigeration and air conditioning, metal and light engineering, electronic and telecommunication and hospitality.

Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Finance to obtain a financial assistance of Euro 15.7 million from the KfW (Kerditanstalt Fur Weideraifbau) of Germany, to establish the said training center with the required training facilities and equipment and to direct the Ministry of Industry & Commerce, Resettlement of Protracted Displaced Persons, Co-operative Development and Vocational Training & Skills Development, to grant independent status to the proposed vocational training center in Matara as well as the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute established in Killinochchi and to manage all the three German Technical Training Institutes in a common Governance structure, was approved by the Cabinet.
