Ideal Motors, the company that provides the best after-sales service among the companies that import vehicles into the country, has launched another major program.
This is a program to repair many of the Mahindra Scorpio jeeps that were provided to police stations in the country 12 years ago, which have now fallen into disrepair and are in the same condition as when they were imported.
While importing a new Mahindra Scorpio currently costs over Rs. 30 million, a dilapidated Mahindra Scorpio imported 12 years ago can be renovated to the same condition as the vehicle was manufactured for as little as Rs. 5.5 million (including VAT), says Nalin Welgama, Founder and Chairman of Ideal Motors Group.
Commenting further on this, Mr. Nalin Welgama said,
In 2011, Ideal Motors provided around 475 Mahindra Scorpio vehicles to the Sri Lanka Police. For the first time, we had the opportunity to re-order a vehicle type purchased once by the Sri Lanka Police and provide 500 Mahindra Scorpio vehicles in 2023. It is a unique achievement for our company.
At that time, about 42 Mahindra Scorpio vehicles, which had been operating in coastal areas for about 12 years, had become very dilapidated due to wear and tear, and when they were ready to be sold, Mahindra Company came forward and undertook the responsibility of repairing the vehicles that were ready to be sold, including an air conditioning system, so that they could be operated for about another 10 years, with a three-year Ideal Motors warranty, for a sum of Rs. 5.5 million including VAT.
After the current IGP, Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya became the IGP, all arrangements have been made to hand over that heavy duty task to Mahindra Company again. Accordingly, the first Mahindra Scorpio vehicle, which was given to Mahindra Company and which was in a very dilapidated condition, was recently renovated and handed over to the IGP Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Priyantha Weerasuriya.
If such a vehicle were imported newly, the customs duty alone would be around Rs. 25 lakh. The total value of the vehicle is more than Rs. 30 lakh. This process carried out by Mahindra Company will save the government a lot of money. Even officials from the Ministry of Finance attended the handover of the repaired vehicle and it is a great achievement for us that Mahindra Company received their special appreciation. After the official handover of this vehicle, we have been assigned the task of repairing another 100 Mahindra Scorpio vehicles owned by the Sri Lanka Police, which have become severely dilapidated, to the same condition as when they were manufactured. Mahindra Company has the ability to repair and hand over those 100 Mahindra Scorpio vehicles in a very short time.
Through this work, a large amount of foreign exchange is retained in the country and Mahindra has been able to create employment opportunities for a large number of Sri Lankans.
We invite other state institutions in the country such as the Sri Lanka Army, the Sri Lanka Navy, and others to join the task of renovating an old vehicle to production condition for a very small amount and contribute to the development of the country, instead of spending crores of foreign exchange on new vehicles. Finally, I would like to state that the reason for this victory is the excellent after-sales service provided by Ideal Motors.
