IMF Says Invitations Extended to All Parties for Parliament Talks

The main opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) appears to have stayed away from recent discussions between Sri Lanka’s Parliament and an International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation, despite invitations being extended to all political parties.

Responding to a question raised by Ada Derana during a media briefing today (09), IMF Mission Chief to Sri Lanka Evan Papageorgiou clarified that invitations to the engagement had been sent to all political party leaders through the Speaker’s Office.

“I believe the invitation was extended to all political parties and political party leaders,” Papageorgiou said, noting that the IMF values broad-based engagement with stakeholders, including political representatives.

He emphasized that such meetings form a key part of the IMF’s outreach efforts, enabling the institution to better understand diverse perspectives on Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic reform programme.

The IMF delegation held discussions with Members of Parliament on a wide range of issues, including the design of the fuel rationing system, fiscal consolidation measures, under-execution of capital expenditure, and the need to strengthen anti-corruption frameworks.

Papageorgiou described the dialogue as “constructive” and “encouraging,” highlighting the thoughtful engagement of those who attended. He added that the IMF remains committed to inclusive discussions and will continue engaging with all stakeholders moving forward.
