Hon. Kanaka Herath, State Minister of Technology, met yesterday with a team of consultants representing the European Union's Enhanced Data Protection & Data Flows project. The meeting aimed to share strategic learnings from the EU with Sri Lanka's Data Protection Authority (DPA).
Ms. Tamar Kaldani and Dr. Aaron Martin, representing the EU project, shared valuable insights on data protection best practices and regulatory frameworks established in the European Union. This knowledge exchange is crucial as Sri Lanka strives to strengthen its own data protection regime.
Joining the discussions were Directors of the Data Protection Authority (DPA), Bimsara Senevirathne and Nishitha Abeysuriya, alongside Waruna Sri Dhanapala, the acting Director General of the DPA. Ms. Dinuji Godigamuwa, Assistant Secretary at the Ministry of Technology, also participated.
This collaboration with the EU project marks a major advance for Sri Lanka's data protection journey. Notably, on minister’s special request the EU to provide a robust action plan and operational blueprint complete with measurable milestones, empowering the Ministry to track progress effectively.
This transparency and clear roadmap ensure accountability and pave the way for a robust data protection framework in Sri Lanka.
