March, 31, 2026

Representatives of the Sri Lanka–Benelux Business Council (SLBBC) of The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce recently paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Wiebe De Boer, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sri Lanka. The meeting opened with welcoming remarks from the Embassy, followed by comments from the President of the Sri Lanka–Benelux Business Council, who thanked the Ambassador for the opportunity to engage and reaffirmed the Council’s interest in encouraging stronger private-sector links between the two countries.

Discussions touched on the current trade relationship between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands and on the role the private sector can play in further expanding it. The Sri Lanka–Benelux Business Council marks nearly 30 years of engagement in promoting business relations with the Benelux region, while 2026 will commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the two nations.

Both sides highlighted several sectors with strong potential for collaboration, including logistics and port development, renewable energy, and maritime services. Sri Lanka’s location along key Indian Ocean shipping routes, together with Dutch expertise in logistics, water management, and sustainable agriculture, was noted as a potential area for deeper cooperation.

The Council also shared its ongoing efforts to promote Sri Lanka as a destination for Dutch investment and discussed ways to increase business-to-business engagement. Initiatives, including sector-focused business forums, networking events, and knowledge-sharing sessions involving Dutch companies operating in Sri Lanka, were explored.

As a follow-up, the Council will share a brief concept note outlining priority sectors and potential engagement initiatives to strengthen business links between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands.
