Sri Lanka goes for two roads on pillars: Between Kelanitissa-Rajagiriya from near HSBC

The government is preparing to constructs two roads on pillars over the main roads to ease the traffic congestion in the Colombo city.

While speaking to adaderanabiz.lk on this project, Road Development Authority (RDA) chief R.W.R. Pemasiri said one of these roads to be constructed would be from near the Kelanitissa power plant to Colombo Fort and the other would be from near the HSBC building at Rajagiriya to near Wesley College in Borella.

“The road from near the Kelanitissa power plant to Colombo Fort would be six kilometres. The construction is estimated to cost around USD 300 million. We expect to begin the construction work by next year,” said Mr. Pemasiri.

He further added that move have already been made to obtain loans for these roads from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and several other lending institutions.

The road from near the Kelanitissa power plant would run along the Colombo harbor to end at Colombo Fort. Once it is completed motorists could skip Baseline Road to enter Colombo Fort through this road.

The road on pillars from near the HSBC bank at Rajagiriya to near Wesley College in Borella would be four kilometres and its construction is planned for next year.

“We are discussing the loan arrangements to construct these roads. This has been planned to ease the prevailing traffic congestion in the Borella area,” said Mr. Pemasiri.
