Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Life Limited (SLICLL) and Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited (SLICGI) extended support to families affected by the recent ‘Ditwah’ cyclone through a special contribution raised internally across both organisations.
The contribution, which was generated through a voluntary initiative by the employees across SLICLL and SLICGL, was formally handed over to the Secretary to the Treasury, Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, at the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development on 22nd January 2025. The donation is intended to support national relief and recovery efforts for communities impacted by the cyclone.
The initiative reflects the shared values of compassion, responsibility, and national service embedded within both SLICLL and SLICGL, reinforcing their commitment to supporting communities during times of adversity. As state-owned insurers with a strong national presence, both entities continue to play an active role in contributing to broader disaster response efforts in collaboration with relevant authorities.
Commenting on the contribution, Chairman of SLIC, Mr. Nusith Kumaaratunga, stated:
“In moments of national difficulty, it is important that institutions come together to support recovery and resilience. This contribution reflects the collective spirit and sense of responsibility within Sri Lanka Insurance Life and Sri Lanka Insurance General to stand with affected communities and support national relief efforts. As state insurers, our role extends beyond insurance protection to making a meaningful contribution to the country when it matters most.” He further noted that initiatives of this nature align with the long standing commitment of SLICLL and SLICGL to social responsibility and nation building, particularly in times of crisis.
SLICLL and SLICGI have consistently supported disaster relief and community assistance initiatives across the country, complementing their core mandate of providing financial protection and risk coverage. In response to the ‘Ditwah’ cyclone, these efforts included the distribution of dry ration packs to affected families and an islandwide clean-up and restoration programme, in addition to the financial contribution made to support national relief efforts.
Through this contribution, Sri Lanka Insurance Life and Sri Lanka Insurance General continue to reinforce their commitment to social responsibility, demonstrating the power of collective action in supporting communities and national recovery efforts.
