Sri Lanka’s Government had suspended flight training near country’s biggest Air Force Base due to security concerns after ISIS terrorists killed more than 250 people last month on 21st April 2019, international reports outline.
Reports said that Flight training has been suspended at Ratmalana, according to the country’s Civil Aviation Authority’s letter that was sent to flying schools and aircraft operators. The letter dated 30th April 2019 further states that training will only be allowed from the Katukurunda domestic airport, around 35 km (22 miles) south of Colombo, and flights can only fly to the south of that base.
The letter also cites new rules ‘In view of the prevailing security threat to the National Defence, lives of public and properties’. The new guidelines also suspend recreational and leisure flights such as sky diving. Reports further outline that no training flights have been operated for two weeks since the rules came into place due to difficulties in moving training operations to Katukurunda, quoting sources.
Earlier nearly over 10 years ago, Sri Lanka suspended training at Ratmalana during the peak of the civil war with Tamil separatists fearing air attacks. Sri Lanka has been on high alert since multiple suicide bombings on Easter Sunday that fell on 21st of April 2019, targeted churches and hotels. Later Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.
