The Steuart by Citrus – boutique business hotel begins serving guests

June, 27, 2015

The Steuart by Citrus, the latest addition to Colombo City’s tourism offering was declared open yesterday (26 June) by Tourism & Sports Minister Naveen Dissanayake amongahosts of distinguished guests.

Located at the very heart of Colombo, The Steuart will operate as a boutique business hotel offering the convenience of its prime location coupled with true Sri Lankan hospitality and traditional Scottish charm. The Steuart, owned by the George Steuart Group, will be managed by Citrus Leisure’s subsidiary Citrus Silver. The property adds 50 rooms to Sri Lanka’s graded inventory and is a reflection of the company’s commitment to the tourism vision of the country.

Steeped in history, the Steuart is built on the premises of Steuart House, the former headquarters of Sri Lanka’s oldest mercantile establishment, the George Steuart Group. The origins of the George Steuart Group go back to 1835 and Steuart House traces its history back several decades when it was among the first high rise buildings at the heart of the capital. The Steuart thus draws design inspiration from the Scottish ancestry of James and George Steuart, the founders of the conglomerate; the interiors will stay true to Scottish design elements across its livery, furnishing and finishes.

This historic building was refurbished and transformed into the present luxury boutique-hotel complex at a cost of some Rs. 350 million by a team led by Architect Nishantha Munasinghe, who also designed the Citrus Hikkaduwa.

Citrus Silver and the George Steuart Group have entered into a 10 year lease for the management of The Steuart by Citrus.
