Former Pakistan cricket legend and global icon Wasim Akram has issued a ringing endorsement of Sri Lanka's tourism potential, asserting that the island nation deserves to be recognized as the “number one holiday destination in the world”.
Speaking on the evening of June 16 at the Softlogic Life investor forum held at Cinnamon Life Colombo, the "Sultan of Swing" shared his deep personal connection with the country, which began during his first visit as a 17-year-old in 1985. Over the decades, Akram has frequented the island as a cricketer, commentator, and most importantly, as a regular tourist.
A "Stunning" Brand Partnership The event marked Akram’s official appointment as the brand ambassador for Softlogic Life. During his remarks, he praised the company’s leadership and its impressive 36% market share in the insurance sector. The forum also saw the launch of a new TV commercial featuring Akram, a production he described as a grueling but rewarding three-day shoot involving a 100-person team.
Unlike the studio-bound, green-screen commercials he often films in Pakistan, Akram noted that this production utilized “real, real locations” that showcased the country's "stunning beauty". He highlighted the scenic landscapes of Galle and the breathtaking mountain ranges with "raging rivers" as places that represent the "stuff of dreams".
Despite having traveled extensively across the globe, Akram maintained that Sri Lanka stands out above all others. “I have seen the world. But this place takes the cake,” he told the audience.
The cricket legend concluded by promising to return to Sri Lanka on a regular basis, "work or no work," and shared his excitement about exploring the island's East Coast in the near future.
