Central Bank Adjusts 2026 Tourism Earnings Under New SLTDA Methodology

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka has updated tourism earnings following the SLTDA's (Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority) methodology revision. Earnings for May 2026 reached USD 155.7 million, bringing the cumulative total for January - May 2026 to USD 1,360 million.

The revision significantly adjusted the figures for the first four months of the year:

  • January: Revised to USD 413.8 Mn (from USD 378.3 Mn)
  • February: Revised to USD 381.4 Mn (from USD 352 Mn)
  • March: Revised to USD 244.8 Mn (from USD 223.7 Mn)
  • April: Revised to USD 164.3 Mn (from USD 157.1 Mn)

This shift aims to enhance the accuracy and representativeness of such estimates incorporating country-specific data on tourist arrivals, average daily expenditure, and average duration of stay, providing a clearer view of the industry's economic impact.
