Reinforcing its commitment to environment and community development, SDB bank continues to support Project BLUE, Bringing Life to the Ecosystem, through its latest phase implemented in partnership with the ZeroPlastic Club of the Ocean University of Sri Lanka. Following the success of the inaugural programme in Dodanduwa, the second phase expanded the initiative to Trincomalee, extending its environmental, educational and community impact while supporting multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Through its partnership with Project BLUE, SDB bank contributes towards advancing environmental conservation, public awareness and community empowerment in alignment with its sustainability and corporate social responsibility commitments. The initiative supports SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by bringing together stakeholders to address marine pollution while promoting sustainable practices.
The first phase of Project BLUE, conducted along the Dodanduwa coastal area, brought together SDB bank volunteers, university students and diving professionals for beach and underwater clean-up activities, alongside awareness programmes focused on marine conservation and plastic pollution. Students of St. Anthony’s National College, Baddegama also participated in educational sessions highlighting the importance of protecting Sri Lanka’s blue ecosystems.
Building on this foundation, the second phase was conducted in Trincomalee, a region recognised for its rich marine biodiversity, thriving fisheries industry and importance as a tourism destination. The programme brought together over 75 university student volunteers, over 50 SDB bank staff volunteers and 10 professional divers to support coastal and underwater conservation efforts. Volunteers collected more than 200 kg of marine debris, helping restore fragile marine habitats and raise awareness on the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. The programme also introduced financial and digital literacy awareness sessions for local communities, highlighting the connection between environmental sustainability, social wellbeing, and long-term economic resilience.
Commenting on the initiative, Manoj Akmeemana, Chief Executive Officer of SDB bank, said, “Project BLUE represents the importance of collaboration in creating sustainable impact. Through our partnership with the Ocean University of Sri Lanka and other stakeholders, we are contributing towards protecting Sri Lanka’s marine ecosystems while supporting communities through knowledge sharing, awareness and collective action. We believe that partnerships such as these play a vital role in encouraging environmental responsibility and building a more sustainable future for generations to come.”
Through its continued support for Project BLUE, SDB bank demonstrates its commitment to meaningful sustainability efforts that extend beyond traditional banking, creating positive value for communities while contributing towards the preservation of Sri Lanka’s marine ecosystems.
