Binance Marks 9-Year Global Milestone with Colombo Meetup, Spotlighting Safe Blockchain Literacy Amid Sri Lanka’s Digital Transformation

July, 13, 2026

Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, celebrated its 9th year anniversary by hosting a community meetup in Colombo on 12th July, bringing together members of Sri Lanka’s blockchain ecosystem at Shangri-La Colombo.

Centered around the global theme "Built by You," the event highlights the evolution of Sri Lanka’s digital-native workforce and the critical importance of secure user education in the emerging Web3 and blockchain landscape.

The milestone gathering arrives at a definitive turning point for the island's macroeconomic landscape. Following Sri Lanka's recent reclassification by the World Bank into an upper-middle-income economy, the country's economic focus is steadily shifting toward high-value, sustainable, and digital-first growth pillars.

SB Seker, Head of APAC, Binance, said “Nine years ago, Binance started with the core belief that technology should be open, accessible, and shaped entirely by the community that utilizes it. As we celebrate this journey, our primary focus in vibrant tech ecosystems like Sri Lanka is to ensure that growth is paired with robust user protection and deep financial literacy. True innovation is only sustainable when the community is empowered with the knowledge to navigate it safely."

Binance launched in July 2017 and today serves more than 323 million registered users across over 100 countries. The 9 year anniversary celebration is firmly anchored in building a deeply educated local community capable of supporting the country's national digital transformation roadmap. As digital adoption scales across South Asia, the recently concluded Colombo meetup which saw attendance of 500+ community members, served as an interactive forum focused on: Advanced User Security: Educating the community on identifying online scams, securing digital wallets, and practicing safe engagement to mitigate digital risks. Grassroots Financial Literacy: Fostering baseline educational discussions around blockchain architecture, decentralization, and the fundamentals of utility-driven digital asset tools, and Web3 Talent Cultivation: Highlighting how Sri Lankan developers and tech professionals are successfully integrating into the global Web3 ecosystem, positioning the island as a competitive hub for digital-first skills.

The Colombo meetup underscores Binance’s ongoing commitment to building a local ecosystem that prioritizes user trust, digital-first education, and safe entry points into the global blockchain economy, helping shape the highly skilled workforce needed to sustain a modernized digital economy.
