China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) has achieved a major construction milestone in the China-aided affordable housing project in Colombo, with the successful topping out of the Maharagama site on 12 May 2026. The milestone marks the completion of the main structural works for 112 housing units, forming part of a wider 1,996-unit housing development designed to support low-income families in Sri Lanka.

Funded by the Government of China under the Belt and Road initiative and implemented by CHEC, the project aims to provide quality, affordable housing while contributing to improved urban living conditions. The development reflects the continued cooperation between China and Sri Lanka in delivering infrastructure that addresses practical community needs and supports long-term social development.

The topping-out ceremony at the Maharagama project site brought together project representatives and stakeholders to mark the progress achieved so far. With the structural phase now completed at the site, CHEC will move ahead with interior finishing, installation works, and related construction activities ahead of completion and handover.

As work advances beyond the topping-out stage, CHEC remains focused on ensuring the successful completion of the remaining phases of the Maharagama site and the broader housing development, supporting the project’s objective of creating safer, more accessible, and better-quality living spaces for Sri Lankan families.
